Feb 1-2 Nature Bound and Brayered with Leslie Marsh
at The Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Boca Raton, FL
http://www.library.fau.edu/depts/spc/JaffeCenter/workshops/nature_bound.php

Inspired by the lavish and intricate manuscripts of the medieval period, instructor Leslie Marsh has developed her own distinct style of metalwork tomes. Here, she pairs her love of ancient treasure bindings with a passion for the natural world. In the process, you will create your own precious 3” x 4” metalwork book, filled with leaf prints you’ll make from gathered materials, with a few blank pages thrown in for your own manuscript. You’ll learn to solder a set of book covers using a small torch and create botanically-printed signature wrappers using inks and brayers. The binding you’ll learn is a 2-needle Coptic Binding. You’ll also stitch a small wool felt bag to house your book. All materials will be provided, as will shared tools.

Feb 22 Eco printing on Fabric
at IS Projects in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
https://www.isprojectsfl.com/workshops/eco-printing-on-fabric

This workshop explores the unique process of Eco-printing on fabric! Eco-printing uses the shapes, colors, and marks left by plants, leaves, and flowers. In this workshop we will be discussing types of fabric suitable for eco printing, and types of mordants needed for the different fabrics, as well as possible modifiers. Then we will begin laying out our plant material on the fabric and talk about folding methods and securing bundles. Each student will go home with a selection of printed sample fabrics, a scarf, and the knowledge to continue this at home.

April 27-30 Botanical Books
at Aya Fiber Studio in Stuart, FL
https://www.ayafiberstudio.com/eco-print-ii/botanical-books-with-merike-van-zanten

Here is a workshop where you not only will learn how to use leaves and plants to print on paper, fabric, and leather, but also turn the results into keepsakes.

During the first two days of this workshop, we will make botanical prints on paper and fabric, and print covers on leather. We will use patterned resists to build background interest, carriers to transfer color and pattern to the print, and eco printing pastes to stencil and stamp images.

On days 3 and 4 we will really get into mixed media by combining fabric and paper with the leather and sewing some books. Think notebooks, Midori travel journals, research and record journals, etc.

I will bring images that can be transferred into the books if you so desire. You can also email me images before the workshop and I will print them for you onto transfer film.

This means we will explore several options to bind books and various options for producing covers. This workshop is suitable for all levels.

We will be discussing types of fabric, paper and leather suitable for eco printing, and types of mordants needed for the different materials, as well as possible modifiers. We will cover folding and securing methods for bundles. With comprehensive, and clear, detailed instructions in the handouts you will leave with the knowledge to continue this at home.
