at The Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Boca Raton, FL

Feb 1-2 2020 Nature Bound and Brayered with Leslie Marsh
at The Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Boca Raton, FL
http://www.library.fau.edu/depts/spc/JaffeCenter/workshops/nature_bound.php
Inspired by the lavish and intricate manuscripts of the medieval period, instructor Leslie Marsh has developed her own distinct style of metalwork tomes. Here, she pairs her love of ancient treasure bindings with a passion for the natural world. In the process, you will create your own precious 3” x 4” metalwork book, filled with leaf prints you’ll make from gathered materials, with a few blank pages thrown in for your own manuscript. You’ll learn to solder a set of book covers using a small torch and create botanically-printed signature wrappers using inks and brayers. The binding you’ll learn is a 2-needle Coptic Binding. You’ll also stitch a small wool felt bag to house your book. All materials will be provided, as will shared tools.

In this workshop we will be discussing types of fabric suitable for eco printing, and types of mordants needed for the different fabrics, as well as possible modifiers. Then we will begin laying out our plant material on the fabric and talk about folding methods and securing bundles. Each student will go home with a selection of printed sample fabrics, a scarf, and the knowledge to continue this at home.
